Press and radio
“the genius lies in the DNA of simplicity”
“songs that travel slowly so they may be savoured”
Alessandro Dematteis
“He walked the aisles singing with nothing behind him. No guitar, no piano, no microphone… pushing the low end of his voice up into that space above everybody’s heads and waiting while the room sent it back. Nobody moved.”
Science and Magic, issue 35
Who they are
Tom Roberts, formerly of Cranebuilders. John Canning Yates, formerly of Ella Guru.
The songs started in a front room on a weekly ritual of tea, talk, a guitar and a piano, and they kept its shape.
In April 2026 they took them into the Gustav Adolf Church on Park Lane, the Nordic seamen’s church on the edge of the Baltic Triangle, and recorded the album live in the room across a residency. Nobody brought a reverb unit. What you hear around the voices is the building.
What it is live
A nylon-string guitar, a Nord Stage piano and three microphones. That's the whole of it.
They bring the piano themselves, so there's nothing for the house to supply beyond a PA and the inputs, and nothing to move at the end. They set up, line check and are ready in minutes. On a tight changeover that counts for as much as the music does.
Stage — two vocal mics · one mic on the nylon-string guitar · Nord Stage piano · four inputs required
The songs are built on space and they work best where the room can be heard: churches, chapels, arts centres, listening rooms and support slots in front of an audience that has come to listen.
They play at low volume by design. Put them on at eleven in a room with a busy bar and the thing that makes them worth booking stops working. Put them in front of a seated audience and the room does half the job.
Thirty minutes, forty-five, or a full set. Travelling from Liverpool.
The record
Debut album, released 17 October 2026 on Violette Records. The band played it front to back in the room where they recorded it, on the day it came out, and everyone who had pre-ordered was handed a copy on the night.

- Reprise
Recorded at the Gustav Adolf Church, Liverpool, April 2026. Recorded, mixed and produced by John Canning Yates. Mastered by Jason Mitchell. Sleeve by Pascal Blua after a hand-coloured rose from William Turner’s A New Herball, 1568.
A single pressing of 300 with no repress. Two singles are on the streaming services. The album is not.
The label
Violette Records has been releasing records and running live events in Liverpool for ten years. Releases include Michael Head & The Red Elastic Band, Snowgoose and Studio Electrophonique.
We promote as well as release. Around thirty shows for Michael Head, independently promoted, staged and sold, from the Union Chapel in London to the Grand Central Hall in Liverpool. La Violette Società ran to sixty-one editions and every one of them sold out.
What that means for a promoter: an audience list of 6,700 concentrated in the North West and reaching nationally, into Europe and worldwide, artwork and print produced in house, press contacts and a label that has sold the tickets itself rather than watched somebody else do it.
